Volkswagen has a new hot hatch hitting the scene, the Golf24. Not so fast, this new VW is part of the Volkswagen Motorsports division and is a full blown racecar. Currently, being tested in Europe, the Golf24 is preparing for the 24 Hour Endurance Championship race at Nürburgring from June 23 to 26, 2011.
The Golf24 is based on the VW best selling Golf / GTI series that is wildly popular around the world. What makes this Golf incredible is its specs: 2.5 liter turbocharged 440 horsepower 5 cylinder engine, 4Motion All Wheel Drive, and a six-speed gearbox with DSG paddle shifters. What we have here is an R32 on steroids!
Director of Volkswagen Motorsports, Kris Nissen said, “With the new Golf24 we are continuing our successful commitment at the Nürburgring 24-hour race. The event enjoys huge popularity, is one of the true classics in motorsport and, due to its extreme distance and unique race track, also represents a very big technical challenge.”
The Golf24 will be on stage in front of a global audience that will make it a great place for Volkswagen to share its 35th anniversary of the GTI. The last VW Golf that competed at the famous roller-coaster circuit of the Nürburgring, was a front wheel drive, 300 horsepower vehicle that finished 8th overall. This 8th place finish was ahead of many other difficult competitors, although with VW’s competitive spirit has high hopes for the Golf24.
Volkswagen motorsports had a great start to the year at the Dakar Rally with the VW team sweeping the podium. The Volkswagen Golf24 is an entirely new vehicle that is packed with technology, more power and all wheel drive, that will give the other competitors a run for their money.
